We are a not for profit organization established to actively defend the rights and freedoms of Floridians who are without religion. We are a local affiliate of the national American Atheists organization whose expressed "Aims and Purposes" we wholeheartedly support. American Atheists was founded in 1963 by the late Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Her many speeches and written works on Atheism make her probably the best-known Atheist of our time. During the First American Atheist Convention held in Austin, Texas, in April of 1970, "The Atheist Manifesto" was unanimously adopted by the conventioneers. Being an affiliate, American Atheists has extended discounts to us on items purchased online at their web site which are otherwise afforded only to their members.
As Atheists, we consider ourselves to be the last minority. We have been persecuted by religious followers because of our freethinking right NOT to believe in deities. It can be very difficult when conversing with co-workers, friends, or even with some family members, to declare that we are Atheists for fear of being derided or of suffering reprisals. We resolve to work for change in way of relief in this regard and to be respectfully recognized by our political leaders.
