Thank you very much.

"Because religious belief, or non-belief, is such an important part of every person's life, freedom of religion affects every individual. State churches that use government power to support themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of the church tends to make the clergy unresponsive to the people and leads to corruption within religion. Erecting the "wall of separation between church and state", therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society." ~ Thomas Jefferson, in a Letter to the Virginia Baptists, 1808.

Atheism may be defined
as the mental attitude
which unreservedly
accepts the supremacy of
reason and aims at
establishing a lifestyle
and ethical outlook
verifiable by experience
and the scientific method,
independent of all
arbitrary assumptions of
authority and creeds.

- Madalyn Murray O'Hair

What Is Materialism?

Some Atheists accept the philosophy of "Materialism". It is a valid philosophy of living that has been around for over six thousand years and cannot be discredited. Materialism declares that the cosmos is devoid of immanent conscious purpose; that it is governed by its own inherent, immutable, and impersonal laws; that there is no supernatural interference in human life; that humankind -- finding their resources within themselves -- can and must create their own destiny. Materialism restores dignity and intellectual integrity to humanity. It liberates us by teaching us not to hope for heaven beyond the grave, not to hope for happiness in death, but rather to prize our life on earth and strive always to improve it. It holds that human beings are capable of creating a social system based on reason and justice. Materialism's "faith" is in humankind and their ability to transform the world culture by their own efforts. This is a commitment which is in its very essence life-asserting. It considers the struggle for progress as a moral obligation that is impossible without noble ideas that inspire us to bold, creative works. Materialism holds that our potential for good and more fulfilling cultural development is, for all practical purposes, unlimited.

An Excerpt

...."This frightful dogma, this infinite lie, made me the implacable enemy of Christianity. The truth is that this belief in eternal pain has been the real persecutor. It founded the Inquisition, forged the chains, and furnished the fagots. It has darkened the lives of many millions. It made the cradle as terrible as the coffin. It enslaved nations and shed the blood of countless thousands. It sacrificed the wisest, the bravest and the best. It subverted the idea of justice, drove mercy from the heart, changed men to fiends and banished reason from the brain.
Like a venomous serpent it crawls and coils and hisses in every orthodox creed.
It makes man an eternal victim and God an eternal fiend. It is the one infinite horror. Every church in which it is taught is a public curse. Every preacher who teaches it is an enemy of mankind. Below this Christian dogma, savagery cannot go. It is the infinite of malice, hatred, and revenge.
Nothing could add to the horror of hell, except the presence of its creator, God.
While I have life, as long as I draw breath, I shall deny with all my strength, and hate with every drop of my blood, this infinite lie."....

"Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth,
the whole truth and nothing but the truth,
so help you God?"

Did you know that in any courtroom you have the right to request an alternative (secular) oath be administered to you?   The alternative oath will not contain the last four words, but instead will include the phrase, "under penalty of perjury".   You will also not be required to "swear", but instead to "state".

To Our First Time Visitors

As each of our guests come here to explore what Atheism is all about, we "Wonderful Atheists" ask that you honestly take a deep look into yourself to answer one question.   Do you doubt the existence of a god, personal or in nature or one which manifests himself, herself, or itself in any way?   If you answered in the affirmative, you are most likely an Atheist.   You may be one of an estimated 27 million Americans who are Atheists and would give the same answer to that question.   Unfortunately, the great majority of us remain apathetic to the religious fervor growing all around while our freedoms are being slowly eroded by the infusion of religious dogma into all the branches of government.

If you feel that you may indeed be an Atheist, but are still in hiding, how do you feel when you must pretend while around others to be somehow communicating directly with a supernatural being when you know deep within yourself that there is no efficacy in prayer?   Do you feel ashamed?... inferior?... cowardly?... guilty?... or just plain disgusted with yourself?   Many of our members also spent a great part of their lives behind their own personal facade pretending to "believe".   That's because we're taught (brainwashed) early in life that our society expects it from us.   However, this could be your chance to finally stand proud and true to yourself by declaring your own personal freedom with the words, "
I AM AN ATHEIST!"   By coming out and joining with us, we can work together to set an example and show other free-thinking people how to escape from their discontent and feelings of isolation and self-criticism.   The first thing you should do is make a commitment to learn more about Atheism and the roots of Atheism.   One important way you can do that is to attend our meetings where your views, concerns, and any questions you may have can be openly discussed with other Atheists.   Is there is anything you would like to say right now GNDMCD@prodigy.net?
